Kindergarten Curriculum |
| |
|
| In our Montessori Kindergarten Curriculum we recognize the individuality of the child and structure our learning programs to meet his/her maximum growth in all areas of the classroom. Equal importance is given to the physical, social, emotional and academic development. The warm structured and balanced environment combined with a blend of some traditional and Montessori curriculum develops order, coordination, concentration and independent work habits. The ethnic diversity and different abilities of the students mirror the society we live and foster respect and in the classroom. |
| Math & language |
| |
| We start with readiness levels in reading and mathematics and follow the child into the next level. Each child is evaluated and individual instruction is provided so that the child builds upon success as he moves in the different areas of the classroom. One child may be blending or decoding words while another may be reading at a “higher grade level”. Understanding and recognizing numbers may be the need of some children whereas some may be adding, multiplying, subtracting or dividing numbers. Memorizing of ‘spelling’ words is introduced which helps in creative and story writing. The kindergartens understand verbs & nouns in concrete terms before he/she goes to grade school. |
| Sensorial Activities |
| |
Sensorial activities gives the kindergarteners a strong foundation in math and help makes associations between Geometrical solids like the Cube, ellipsoid, trapezoid, parellogram….” with objects in the classroom. |
| Science |
| |
Science is a wealth of discovery in the Montessori classroom which includes discussions, listening, experiments (air, water, light, magnets… entrance into the world of the dinosaurs, the solar system…) and field trips. Abstract experiences become concrete at every step (naming parts of a fish entails bringing in a fish for the child to touch, feel and name. We cater to the needs of ‘what’? In the room by naming everything (parts of a horse, flower, fish…). The Science fair at the end of the year reflects a love for learning and the ability of the children to sequence. The increase in self- confidence and language skills is very evident. |
| Geography and cultural study |
| |
In Geography and cultural study units the kindergartens work on more advanced concepts – continents, land forms, map building – they discuss peninsulas, isthmus, and archipelagos with ease and help the younger children find this on the globe. A lot of creative writing and lifestyles exposure to everyday objects form different countries gives them a respect for our environment and the importance of peace. |
| Art |
| |
Art takes many forms and is related to every area of the classroom – creating maps, globes, prisms, illustrating stories………. Different mediums – clay, chalk, paper mache, soap, yarn, and tiles are offered to the child to experiment with. |
| Music |
| |
Music is part of the child’s everyday ‘life’ and is combined with dance, movement and language skills. |
| Foreign Languages |
| |
French, Japanese and Spanish are part of our curriculum, taught as oral languages emphasing vocabulary and pronounciation. |
| Summer Programs |
| |
Noviwoods Montessori offers a well rounded summer program focussing on academic, sports, science and social skills. |
We take pride in the fact that the kindergartners are developing ‘life skills’ that help them be successful even beyond their school years. They are learning to make choices, use time management techniques, problem solve, work cooperatively and finish tasks within a reasonable period of time. They are learning how to learn and become life long learners. We see the kindergarten year as a year that leadership skills blossom and is the most fruitful year of the Montessori experience. |
